The Steve Kearney Bursary

Steve Kearney's association with the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) dated back many years during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd when he negotiated a more favourable deal in terms of their mineral royalties. After his death in 2004, the RBN instituted the Steve Kearney bursary in his honour.

Qualifying Criteria

The bursary is awarded to candidates who satisfy the following criteria:

  • They should be South African citizens who form part of the group of historically disadvantaged persons.
  • They should presently be studying an undergraduate, an honours or a masters degree.
  • They should be enrolled at a the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
  • They should be enrolled in one of the disciplines in the school of Geosciences.
  • An application form should be completed and a CV attached with full academic record.
  • Two essays on a topic determined by the Board of Trustees should be submitted.

What does the bursary offer?

  • Registration, tuition and examination fees.
  • University residence fees.
  • Course books and other tutorial materials.
  • A reasonable allowance, as determined by the Board of Trustees, to cover living expenses.

Selection process

The Board of Trustees will review applications from all candidates and draw up a shortlist. Candidates who are short-listed will be required to undergo an interview before the final decision by the Board of Trustees is made.

Terms and Conditions

The bursary is re-awarded each year subject to a student's successful and satisfactory completion of the previous year's studies.
